Utility rebates:
Save with lighting upgrades

Utility companies provide significant incentives to businesses to upgrade their conventional lighting to more efficient LED lighting systems. Utility rebates have made energy-efficient lighting upgrades highly affordable for businesses and can even cover the entire project cost depending on the program and funding. There are more than 3,000 utility companies across the US, each with their own lighting incentive program for both new construction and retrofit lighting upgrade projects. Rebate programs are highly beneficial both for businesses and utilities, as they help to lower the initial investment for owners as well as reduce utilities' demand for power generation.

The process of exploring utility programs, analyzing energy savings, applying, and tracking rebate applications is often time-consuming and complicated. Mysupplier's rebate management solution can help you navigate the intricacies of utility rebate programs from assessment to implementation.

Types of utility rebate programs

Most utilities have rebates or incentive programs for both new construction and retrofit projects. Although the scope and type of rebates offered vary significantly for programs from different utilities, rebate programs, in general, can be classified into instant, prescriptive, and custom rebates.

Instant Rebates

Instant rebates are the most common type of rebates, provided by approved distributors and trade professionals at the point of sale. Although it covers only a handful of products (mostly lamps), it does not require any pre-approval to claim the rebate. Some utilities may require the new lighting upgrade to be installed within 30 days since purchase.

Prescriptive Rebate

Prescriptive rebates offer a predetermined amount for every installed efficiency measure that meets the program requirements. However, based on the project size and proposal, it may require pre-approval, pre-install, and post-install inspections before the funds can be claimed. The rebate amount varies by type of lighting or control measure.

Custom Rebates

Custom rebates are applicable for projects that are not covered by instant or prescriptive programs. A workbook or online tool is used to collect data such as schedule hours, existing and proposed lighting, space considerations, etc. to calculate the rebates. The rebate amount depends on the total energy (kW or kWh) savings by the efficiency measure.
